Notes of Interest
Greetings: It has been some time since I have updated the website and there has been a lot happening in grade 2. I have posted a few new pictures that include the students doing their car races in science, some baking shots and a few different math activities. We have been learning about fractions, multiplication and division in math and we have been using manipulatives as a way to develop these concepts. This term has been focused on discussing and developing criteria that is important for success in writing, reading and math. The criteria for problem solving has been developed and practised by the students. The specific criteria for writing success has centred around the development and organisation of writing ideas which has been taught through writing webs, conversations and peer and cooperative learning opportunities. The use of complex sentences rich in detail has also been encouraged and modelled. From the conventions side of the writing process students have worked towards greater consistency in the use of capitals, punctuation and spelling. In reading a considerable amount of discussion has revolved around fiction and non-fiction text features and how these features help us read, understand and talk about what we have read. A greater understanding of before, during and after reading strategies has improved reading comprehension for many students. |
Earth Day As part of our Earth Day discussions the students talked a lot about litter. As a class we are going to try to bring in one or two snacks each day in our lunch that have no packaging or are in reusable containers. The students are aware that there is a lot of "litter". To help reduce the amount of litter we are going to try and do our part as a class to reduce the packaging and single use plastics we have in our lunches. The discussion will focus on increasing the students awareness of how much packaging is being produced and how this is impacting the earth. Educating that students about this at their age is the beginning of changes in the future. The degree to which your family chooses to get involved in this opportunity for learning is left to your discretion. We are going to be talking and sharing ideas for the next two weeks about this very important topic.
